Rupert Christiansen uses the recent case of Mid Wales Opera, a company that gained funding from Arts Council Wales but not Arts Council England, to explain why the arts funding system is in disrepair.

 Many newspaper stories one reads about the arts are suppositional, following such tropes as “There are fears that” or “There’s a danger that” or “If something good doesn’t happen, something bad will”.

The reality is that while there has undoubtedly been hardship and cuts over the last six years of slump and austerity, the sector as a whole has proved admirably resilient and resourceful in finding ways to survive and even flourish. Being slightly hungry sharpens the wits and speeds you up.
