For Franko Figueiredo of StoneCrabs the benefits of touring internationally are many, from the opportunity for artistic exchange and the chance to take more financial risks, to greater all-round production support.

Lyn Gardner recently wrote a blog about how British-based companies must look beyond borders and create partnerships overseas, particularly at a time when funding is tight. At StoneCrabs we do just that, but it's not just because of the financial benefits. Talking with peers, many say that our UK market is oversaturated, that there too many companies producing theatre work. If they cannot be programmed here, they have to look for opportunities elsewhere. Overseas partnerships may offer opportunity and financial rewards but they also offer the artistic exchange, growth, exposure and all-round production support that is not always available in the UK.

Over the past few years StoneCrabs has collaborated with companies from Denmark, Japan, Spain and Brazil and programmers from theatres in America and Australia. As a company without core funding our survival, both financially and artistically, is dependent on the partnerships we have developed over the years. The mutual desire to experiment, create and grow, and the strength of communication (whether overseas or not) has made past collaborations a success... Keep reading on The Guardian
