A new Manifesto setting out a shared agenda to ensure that all young people have access to high quality learning experiences outside the classroom environment has been endorsed by Arts Council England, and cultural organisations working with young people are being encouraged to sign up to its aims. The Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto, launched by Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Education and Skills, will act as a statement of common intent to inspire schools and organisations that work in this field to provide high-quality experiences for all young people.

Research has identified a range of barriers to achieving this: time and cost considerations; fears for pupil safety and the prospect of teachers facing legal action; bureaucracy; low awareness of the benefits and opportunities available; and a lack of confidence and training for teachers. The Manifestos proposals are designed to tackle these barriers. More than 100 organisations have so far signed up to it, including the Natural History Museum (pictured).
