?The real world?, a new report examining the state of the crafts sector in the South West, has concluded that makers should have better access to national resources and greater recognition from regional agencies, and that partnerships between makers, galleries, development agencies, cultural agencies and educational institutions are the most appropriate mechanisms for the future development of the sector.
Published by South West Arts, the report highlights the importance of crafts to the region, which supports over 5,000 makers, the highest concentration outside London. Crafts are found to play a large part in attracting visitors to the region, and over a fifth of the galleries have a turnover of £100,000 per annum, with average turnover at £60,000.
