Elizabeth Newman argues for the value of young people studying drama, not just for society, but for the growth and development of individuals.

Due to my line of work, my position regarding the cutting back of so-called ‘soft’ subjects is somewhat predictable.

Having completed a GCSE and an A-level in drama, and a degree in directing, I am now in my sixth year as Associate Director at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton, having previously held a similar position in London’s Southwark Theatre.

At the age of 28, the ‘soft’ subject of drama has paved a sturdy path to a varied and rewarding career, and the idea that this path could soon be closed to others is disquieting.
