Is opera in cinemas for a fraction of the cost drawing audiences away from live performances, asks Alice Lagnado.

Watching opera from a comfy seat in a warm cinema, drink or cup of tea in hand, is one of the most comfortable cultural experiences you can have these days.

It’s cheap, you get a good view wherever you’re sitting, and if you’re desperate for a loo break you can easily creep out.

But does the dramatic rise in numbers of people seeing opera at their local cinema or on their computers at home mean that live singing is slowly dying a death?
