The William Morris Gallery explains how it applied for, and won, the prestigious £100,000 Art Fund award for Museum of the Year.

In June 2013, the William Morris Gallery won the Museum of the Year award. The Art Fund’s Museum of the Year award celebrates innovation and creativity in heritage.

The William Morris Gallery applied for the award after the redevelopment, hoping to gain recognition of their work.

In 2007, the gallery faced cuts to funding. A public campaign was launched, which resulted in a five million pound redevelopment, funded by Waltham Forest Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and other contributors.

Anna says that it’s “phenomenal to just have been on the shortlist. We are a small organisation, but that’s part of reason we won: we proved what a small local authority museum can be if it gets the right support... Keep reading on Creative & Cultural Skills
