Josie Gurney-Read reports on the Your Paintings project which toured 26 masterpieces worth around £14m to schools across the UK.

First hand experiences are hard to beat. In primary school, our trip to Cockley Cley Iceni Village successfully brought alive our study of Boudica – I remember proudly showing off my ‘genuine’ Iceni coin to teachers, friends, parents; in fact, anyone who would listen.

Even at university, the best seminars were those that were held in the British Museum, a resource we were lucky to have close-by.

Yet for some schools, the luxury of travelling to museums and galleries is not always possible and recent figures from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have shown that since 2009/10, the number of children visiting a museum or gallery in England has fallen by nearly 10%.

However, a recent collaboration between the Public Catalogue Foundation (PCF) and BBC Learning has sought to give schoolchildren the opportunity to view works of art close-up, by bringing the masterpieces to them in the classroom.
