Sir Simon Rattle has lent his support to the National Youth Orchestras (NYO) new poster campaign, aimed at raising awareness of its application process.
Outdoor advertising company Clear Channel is carrying the posters on Adshel sites at bus shelters and near schools across the UK. 600 young musicians audition for a place in the orchestra every year, but the NYO is concerned that 60% of the NYO come from independent schools or specialist music schools, and only 40% from state schools. The poster shows a tearful Sir Simon being informed that he doesnt have the qualifications to audition, because hes over the cut-off age of 18.
