A new artwork comprising a giant mirrorball 6m in diameter has been installed as part of an ongoing series of permanent outdoor works along Blackpool?s south shore promenade.
The 4.5 tonne ball by Manchester artist Michael Trainor is covered in 47,000 identical mirrors, rotates at a speed of 1rpm and has been heralded as a new icon for Blackpool?s brighter, shinier future. It has been installed in spite of early objections by planners due to concerns about blinding road users and light aircraft.
