Three new Lottery capital projects have been given the go-ahead by the Arts Council of England, which has announced a £4.3m grant for the refurbishment of Watford?s Palace Theatre, £2.4m to Artsadmin to improve access and build a new studio, and £4.1m to Rother District Council for the redevelopment and refurbishment of the De La Warr Pavilion, a Grade 1 listed building in Bexhill-on-Sea.
A further £1.9m from the Heritage Lottery Fund has also been committed for this project, which two years ago faced an uncertain future. The Council, at that time keen to unburden itself of the building?s running costs, unveiled plans to hand over responsibility for the De La Warr Pavilion to the pub/restaurant chain J.D.Wetherspoon plc. Such was the public outcry about the proposals that the plans were dropped and the building is now destined to become a major centre of contemporary art, architecture and live performance.
