With slashed budgets, a collapsed tourist industry and constant simmering unrest, how is it that Egypt’s arts scene is thriving, asks Ivan Hewett.

What do music and the arts need to flourish? You might say ample resources, and peace and quiet. In allegorical paintings, peace and prosperity are what encourage the Muses to step forth and bestow their gifts on mankind.

Right now, those things are in short supply in Egypt. The economy is in dire straits, and that’s a source of constant simmering unrest. The tourist industry has collapsed, which has devastated the income of thousands who depended on it.
