Independent schools offer outstanding facilities that offer pupils a head-start in the ultra-competitive theatre industry and helps them justify their huge fees, says Boarding School Beak.

'Oh, no – not the school play!” It’s that time of term again. Everything stops for the school play. Pupils have the perfect excuse to miss classes: “It’s OK, Sir – I’m in the play. We’ve got an important rehearsal.”

Drama teachers seem in a hurry for a change. Gone are their usual carefree looks (smirking at the rest of us, while we’re rushed off our feet with coursework). Suddenly they’re sporting velvet jackets, or shorter skirts. Anything to look more theatrical.

Boys get a chance to wear make-up and are slow to wipe it off: a badge of pride that says, “I’m in the play”. Classes are full of excitement, despite the fact only a tiny minority of boys and girls are directly involved.

The performance itself can be a pain too – and not just because the seats are so hard. Gone are the days when you, the teacher, could sink back for an hour or two, safe in the knowledge you’d be left undisturbed and – who knows – might be offered a glass of tepid Lambrusco in the interval...
