Actors union Equity has launched a campaign attacking plans by Ofcom, the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, to auction off certain frequencies within the radio spectrum to the highest bidder following the proposed switchover to digital TV broadcasting. The frequencies involved include those which are currently used in theatre radio equipment onstage, backstage and at outdoor events.

Equity has expressed concern that wealthy corporations such as mobile phone operators will be able to out-bid the fragmented theatre sector in a bidding war to control the spectrum. It is asking its members to write to their MPs, urging them to sign an Early Day Motion in support of guaranteeing a sufficient quality and quantity of the spectrum for theatres use, and recognising that there is no feasible commercially viable alternative to analogue equipment in the theatre and special events sector. Ofcom is conducting a consultation about its proposals until 20 March. To take part, contact Paula Guest.
