The euro25,000 Sovereign European Art Prize has been awarded to French artist Damien Cadio for Esercito (pictured), with British artist Wendy Elia winning the euro1,000 public vote for her painting, Nick.

The Sovereign Prize was founded by tax lawyer and entrepreneur Howard Bilton, and is the only painting prize in the UK that sets out to raise money for the arts. The winning painting will enter the Sovereign Art Foundation collection while the remaining 33 finalist works have been auctioned at Bonhams, where they raised euro80,000 for the Foundations charitable work. The money raised from the inaugural 2006 prize has been invested in projects managed by Arts & Kids and CREATE.
