The Director of London’s Vagina Museum, FLORENCE SCHECHTER, will be stepping down in May.

She will be replaced in the short term by the museum's Head of Communications and Fundraising, ZOE WILLIAMS, who will act as Interim Director for a six-month period.

An author and public speaker, Schechter founded the museum in 2017 initially as a series of pop-up events. It opened its first fixed premises in Camden Market in 2019 but had to leave in 2021 after its lease was not renewed.

It has been located in Bethnal Green since March 2022, first through a property guardianship scheme and later in long-term fixed premises following a successful crowdfunding campaign raising £85,000.

Schechter said: “Taking the museum from just an idea to its long-term home in Bethnal Green has been an experience I will never forget. It has been an honour to work alongside the best people from museums, feminist activism and health.

“This decision comes from a place of personal reflection and the recognition that it's time for me to take a step back and recharge"

JO JOYCE, a trustee of the Vagina Museum, said: "The past seven years have seen Florence achieve the impossible, over and over again. Under her entrepreneurial leadership, the Vagina Museum has grown into the globally-recognised organisation and beloved London space that it is now.”
