The Victoria & Albert Museum, which introduced voluntary admission charges in 1985 and fixed charges in 1996, has become the first charging museum to come out in favour of free admission.
The announcement was made by the V&A?s new Director, Mark Jones, on his first day in his new post. He has pledged that the museum will be free to all visitors in time for the opening of the new flagship British Galleries on November 22.The announcement also coincided with the start of Museums and Galleries Month during May, when the V&A is open free to the public on Wednesdays from 10.00am to 10.00pm.
