Leeds city centre was taken over for two weeks in May by a new arts festival. Situation Leeds, the first significant arts festival in the city for ten years, was an open, artist-led event run on a collaborative curatorial model.
Over a period of eighteen months, artists had been briefed to devise projects that ?appealed to the public realm?. With no formal selection process, 160 events were finally included in the festival programme including the construction of a football terrace from junk materials, the dressing of trees in lingerie, the creation of a mud factory and Shezad Dawood and David Medalla?s ?Restaging of Vito Acconci?s Following Piece?
