A new assessment of the contribution made by the cultural sector to Scotland?s economy has revealed that the majority of Scottish Arts Council (SAC) funding to Scottish arts organisations stays in Scotland, supports local artists and creates activity in industries that supply the arts sector in Scotland.
The research, conducted by researchers at the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow, focused on museums, galleries and arts organisations, and used SAC core funded organisations as the basis for its arts sample. 98% of the expenditure of these organisations was found to be placed in Scotland, with a high proportion going to support each organisation?s principal artistic activity. SAC core funded organisations support a total of 4,026 full-time jobs in Scotland, representing £72.5m of income. Each job in the arts supports a further 0.83 jobs elsewhere in Scotland and each £1 paid to employees in the arts supports a further £0.87 of income in other industries. A similar picture emerges from Scotland?s museums and galleries, which support 3,285 full-time jobs in Scotland, representing £64.3m of income. Each job in Scotland?s museums and galleries supports a further 0.64 jobs elsewhere.
