Following the recent announcement that financial difficulties have led the Leicester Haymarket Theatre to close (ArtsProfessional issue 51, June 2), Arts Council England has awarded recovery funding of £1.3m to secure the long-term future of the company and the reopening of the theatre to the public in 2004.
Until then, a reduced staff will operate from the Theatre to develop new projects, deliver educational, participatory and specially funded work, and plan for the opening of a new performing arts centre in 2006. 63 permanent jobs will be lost and the Board has put in place a range of outplacement services including counselling and legal advice, job search training, pensions and financial advice, and access to benefits and state support services.
