An audit launched by the Foreign Secretary in July 2012 looking at what the EU does and how it affects the UK, has reached a stage where it will examine the EU in relation to its impact on culture, tourism and sport. The Balance of Competencies Review is designed to provide an analysis of what the UK’s membership of the EU means for the UK national interest, which is broken down into a series of reports on specific areas of EU competence, spread over four semesters between autumn 2012 and autumn 2014. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is due to lead this part of the consultation and is asking interested parties with relevant knowledge, expertise or experience to complete a survey or send a letter to balanceofcompetences@culture.gsi.gov.uk to inform the Government’s thinking on the EU issues concerning culture. A report based on the review will be published by the end of the year.  A document summarising EU impact on UK culture is available here.
