The National Youth Theatre (NYT) has issued its first full statement about ‘Homegrown’, the play inspired by three schoolgirls who travelled to Syria to join Islamic State, since it was cancelled amid cries of censorship a month ago. The statement points to doubts that the play handled its subject matter with sensitivity and editorial balance, and says the fact a completed script was not delivered on time and complaints were submitted by the cast and parents rendered NYT’s position “completely untenable”.
