Arts, culture and heritage organisations are being invited to participate in the annual Charity Awards. An independent panel of judges is looking for examples of excellence, together with ideas and leadership that will inspire and from which others can learn. Entries close on 4 March.

A £5m grant from the Department for Education is set to transform an old fire station site on Bridewell Island in the centre of Bristol into a youth hub for creativity, including arts workshop spaces, a theatre and dance studios. The Kingswood Foundation is heading up the funding bid, which will also allow young people access to other services at the venue, including counselling, sexual health and careers advice.

An online survey has been launched to give arts professionals the chance to share their views on the development and implementation of the Government’s Arts Philanthropy Action Plan (see AP230). Opinions shared by respondents will be fed to Arts Council England in mid March and will form part of its ongoing consultation process. Arts consultancy AQ, which is running the survey, will be publishing its findings by the end of March.

Applications are being invited for the 2011 Cultural Policy Research Award. Launched in 2004 by the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) and the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, the €10,000 award is to enable a young cultural policy researcher to undertake comparative and cross-cultural research that can shed light on contemporary European cultural issues and challenges, inform policymaking, and benefit practitioners active in the field. The closing date for applications is 30 May.

BBC Radio 3 is planning its first ever season of live evening broadcasts, which will begin on 3 May and continue up until the Proms. Listeners will be able to hear the live broadcasts direct from venues across the UK every weekday evening in ‘Performance on 3’. Across the year there will be at least 46 weeks of live concerts in the evening schedule. They will feature performing groups including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Britten Sinfonia, as well as solo recitals and chamber music concerts.

Sound and Music, a new company created from the merger of the British Music Information Centre, Contemporary Music Network, Society for the Promotion of New Music and Sonic Arts Network, is to receive £150,000, funding award from The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to support its artist professional development programme, ‘Embedded’. The programme will place talented artists at early stages in their careers into real-world artistic contexts with leading arts organisations and ensembles. Partners include Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, no.w.here, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Apartment House, and Pervasive Media Studio with The Watershed in Bristol.
