A concrete room with the words 'I am what I am

‘Ikon Eastside’, Ikon gallery’s exhibition space in Digbeth, Birmingham, is to close in April due to cuts in public funding. Ikon has been based in Eastside for more than five years, originally occupying two disused industrial buildings before settling into new premises in 2008. As an exhibition space geared towards large-scale works, video installations and events, it has shown work by artists including Andy Warhol and Siobhan Davies Dance. It was also a venue for cultural festivals such as Flatpack, Supersonic and the International Dance Festival. Jonathan Watkins, Ikon’s Director, said: “We are extremely saddened to be losing Ikon Eastside, but our commitment to bringing internationally recognised art to the city is unwavering. Looking to the future, our goal remains to create a permanent museum of contemporary art for Birmingham.” The main galleries will remain open as normal, and the ongoing feasibility study into a proposed museum of contemporary art for Birmingham (‘Ikon Two’) is also unaffected.
