A multi-million-pound theatre restoration project in Glasgow has been granted £382k of council funding due to the “scale and complexity” of the project to “ensure its successful completion”.

Citizens Theatre, which is undergoing a £22m redevelopment, has been issued the additional financing as part of Glasgow City Council’s £2.242m award from the Scottish Government's Place Fund.

The scheme is a Scottish Government capital fund for community projects.

Glasgow City Council owns the building, leasing it to Citizens Theatre Ltd, which is running the works working alongside council officers.

Construction of the revamped Citizens Theatre began in 2019 as the original Victorian building was found to have significantly deteriorated.

Large sections of the foyer and administrative offices have been demolished and replaced with a contemporary structure. However, the project will preserve the building’s original main stage and auditorium.
