Just a few weeks into Derry-Londonderry’s possession of the new title UK City of Culture, the DCMS has launched a competition to see who might take up the mantle in 2017. Minister for Culture Ed Vaizey urged local authorities and partnerships across the UK to consider put themselves forward: “The UK City of Culture is a prestigious title that is a vehicle for encouraging economic growth along with highlighting the very best of the country’s cultural talent.” Interest must be registered by February and bids for the title received by April, with the winner being announced in Derry-Londonderry in November.
