Aberystwyth Arts Centre it is to conduct a review of activities and staffing structures “to ensure resources are fully utilised” and will become part of the University’s new Institute for Literature, Languages and the Creative Arts in August 2013. The plans, detailed in the newly published draft Strategic Plan for the next three years, follow the suspensions of Centre Director Alan Hewson and Operations Director Auriel Martin and comments from the University’s Chancellor, Professor April McMahon, that  the centre needed to work on “improving the use of space which would otherwise be standing empty” which have led to concerns from artists and the public that the Centre is to be the victim of heavy-handed restructuring.  Currently, the Centre Director reports directly to the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, a member of the University’s Executive Board, but the centre management will in future report to the head of the Institute, who will in turn report to the Executive. The Strategy also says that the Arts Centre will look to establish consortia of UK University Arts Centres to provide UK-wide benchmarks and build collaborations.
