A group of key figures in the worlds of arts and education has called on Government and local authorities to take up a new approach to culture and learning. The Culture and Learning Consortium, which published its report in preliminary form in January (AP185), has now launched a final version, re-titled ‘Get It: The Power of Cultural Learning’. The report, which appears in both in book and online formats, is part of a two-year campaign, and includes endorsements from leading artists and educationalists. It urges the recognition and promotion of cultural learning as a key element of the curriculum. It also recommends that all cultural organisations “should give cultural learning a core role in their work”. Vikki Heywood, Executive Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, speaking at the launch at the Royal Society of Arts in London, said that the report “could define a moment of change in behaviour, practice and funding that enables the creative industries and educationalists to awaken children to the power of cultural learning”. The Culture and Learning Consortium represents Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and a number of prominent charitable foundations which support the arts and education.
