In advance of the Cultural Olympiad for 2012, £40m has been endowed by the DCMS (£6m), Arts Council England (£5m), the Big Lottery Fund (£5m) and the Millennium Commission (£24m) to deliver a programme of cultural and sporting activities linked to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

The Legacy Trust, which was first announced at the end of 2006, is starting to operate immediately and will use the money to promote the arts and sport to young people across the UK. The bulk of the funds will be distributed from 2008 onwards, supporting both a series of national programmes and projects in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the nine English regions. National projects include the Big Arts Week and the World Festival of Youth Culture.
