Opportunities for learners to experience and study Scottish literature, a sustained programme for identifying and nurturing literary talent, increased investment in the publishing industries of Scotland and the co-ordination of Scotland’s literary tourism are among the long-term the goals expressed in a new strategic vision for literature in Scotland over the next decade. ‘Literature, Nation’ has been published by the Literature Forum for Scotland, replacing the Scottish Arts Council’s (SAC) literature strategy for 2002–07.

. Supported by SAC, the Literature Forum brings together all of Scotland’s national literature and writers’ organisations, and its new document attempts to offer a positive and informing contribution to government policy, and the design of Creative Scotland. It also advocates the regular presence of Scottish writers at international festivals, the development of an integrated support structure for the Scots language and the creation of a network of literary festivals and events across Scotland. Through measures such as these, the Literature Forum hopes to underline the potential of literature to help deliver local and central government objectives.
