Martello Tower by the sea

Nine more seaside towns will benefit from the latest round of funding from the Government’s ‘Sea Change’ programme, which aims to reinvigorate England’s coastal resorts through investment in culture and heritage. The programme, which will run from 2008 to 2011, is led by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment working with the Regional Development Agencies, English Heritage, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund. Grants include £30,000 for a study to explore the potential for developing the land around the Martello Tower (pictured) in Jaywick, Essex, to become a centre for creativity; £26,500 for Teignbridge District Council to explore creating an Arts Café venue on the site of an old bandstand in Dawlish; and £1m for Foreshore in South Shields to extend the current summer programme into year-round activities with space for theatre and performance artists, along with outdoor spaces for educational visits.
