A 35-foot-high mural (pictured top) has been demolished after Cardiff City Council granted consent for a new commercial development that led to the building being torn down (pictured bottom). Permission was given without any consultation with experts in the field. Ray Howard Jones’s work, entitled ‘An Eye for the People’ and constructed in Italy, was due to be the Welsh representative on the Twentieth Century Society’s (C20) new website celebrating the best post-war murals in the country. Dr Lynn Pearson, an expert on post-war murals, called the work “a glorious example of post-war mural art”, and said that “its destruction was pure vandalism”. C20 are still planning to list the mural when the website is launched next month, as a reminder of what has been destroyed.
