With ‘Avatar’ still busting its way through the record books, the classical arts jump the 3D bandwagon later this year when the Royal Opera House becomes the first in its field to film and screen full-length performances using the technology. The London-based organisation is working in partnership with RealD, a 3D cinema technology provider, to bring its operas and ballets to audiences across the world. The first opera to be shown in 3D will be Bizet’s ‘Carmen’, to be filmed in June and released in cinemas in the autumn. Directed by Francesca Zambello, the production will be shot with specialist cameras at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden using 3D cameras over two sessions. Audiences will be invited to attend, with tickets being sold at a specially discounted rate.
