A new online Journal of Cultural Management and Policy is being produced by ENCATC, the European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centers, to stimulate debate among scholars, educators, policy makers and cultural managers. Conscious of signs that the Olympics will have a negative effect on ticket sales at London’s theatres, the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) is preparing a campaign to promote its line-up of productions and special offers. ‘Don’t Miss The Real Show in 2012’ is being supported by the Mayor’s Office, LOCOG, Transport for London, London & Partners and VisitBritain to encourage visitors to make a trip to the theatre during the summer. To get the message across to those working at the Games, SOLT has arranged for 2,012 of the 8,000 volunteers involved in the Mayor of London’s Games Ambassador Programme to be given free tickets between 16 January and 10 February.

A new online arts venture is aiming to help selling galleries manage slow moving stock more effectively. According to study carried out by blutulip.com in conjunction with the Fine Art Trade Guild, 78% of galleries find that slow moving stock results in poor cash flow, which prevents them from buying new collections and pieces. The new service aims to offer a trading portal for the contemporary art industry which will allow gallery owners to discreetly buy and sell stock amongst themselves, and artists to showcase their work directly to the trade.

Artists and commercial tenants are coming together in a new £3.5m creative industries studio complex in the regenerated South Block warehouse in Glasgow’s Merchant City. The initiative, managed by social enterprise charity Wasps, is bringing together top artists and creative sector entrepreneurs and is bucking commercial property trends in the city. South Block has already secured tenants for around 70 of the available 96 workspaces. The money raised by renting space to commercial businesses is used by Wasps to reduce the rents for artists and social enterprises to around half the market rate.

Connect10, a national competition for UK-wide cultural venues to win an artist-led event and a share of £7,000, has announced the ten contemporary artists who will be involved in the project as part of Museums at Night, the annual after-hours celebration taking place from May 18 to 20. To compete for the artists, venues must find connections between their venue, location or collection and the work of one of the ten artists, and pitch a Museums at Night event idea involving their chosen artist. Culture24, the Museums at Night organisers, will select the two or three most interesting event ideas for each of the artists, and the public will decide, via online voting, where each artist will be sent.
