Musicians who identify as ‘learners’ may be better able to sustain a career in music, according to a study published in the Music Education Research journal.

Researchers found that the “discovery and exploration of their learner identity” led musicians to seek additional learning opportunities outside of their formal education, bringing beneficial skills, knowledge and experience, and “moments of transformation which informed their career decision making”. The findings are based on the testimonies of eight classically-trained cellists based in Europe.
