A project to develop the UKs first purpose-built venue for writers has been launched by the School of English at Newcastle University and New Writing North, the writing development agency for the north east of England.
The £5.2m Northern Writers Centre building, which will be based in Newcastle, will include offices, and performance and workshop spaces. The project comes after an eight-year collaboration between the two organisations: more than half of the cost of the project is being met by the University and a further £2m will need to be raised over the next 18 months if the centre is to open in 2010.
