Eight Creative Programmers have been appointed by Culture Minister Margaret Hodge to take forward plans for the Cultural Olympiad, in the run up to the 2012 Olympics. Each of Englands eight regions, outside of London, has selected a delegate who will be based in their Regional Cultural Consortium the DCMSs strategic cultural development agencies.
The appointments are: Liz Hughes (East), Paul Brookes (East Midlands), Lorna Fulton (North East), Deborah Lander (North West), Caterina Loriggio (South East), Richard Crowe (South West), Tessa Gordziejko (Yorkshire) and Paul Kaynes (West Midlands). The Progammers responsibilities will include encouraging and enabling arts and cultural bodies to get involved in the Olympiad; creating opportunities for people to take part; acting as a link between the regions and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games; and assessing whether local projects meet the criteria to become part of the Cultural Olympiad. Scotland and London are currently considering how they can best become involved in the Cultural Olympiad, with Northern Ireland having already appointed a Cultural Programmer and Wales appointing an interim Creative Programmer.
