Christmas cant come soon enough for children who love reading, after the announcement of the first national programme to provide every schoolchild in year 7 with a free book by the end of 2007. Announced last week by the reading charity Booktrust, Booked Up is supported by a £2.8m grant from the Department for Education and Skills, making the programme free for all participating schools.

The scheme was applauded by Childrens Laureate, Michael Rosen (pictured) who said, I think this scheme will boost all childrens reading for pleasure and really help bridge the Year 6 to 7 gap for children, as they make that difficult move to a new secondary school.
