More females than males, more non-disabled than disabled people, and more adults from higher socio-economic groups participate in cultural activities, according to the latest figures from the Taking Part survey, published by the DCMS. The findings, which cover library attendance, heritage visits, museum and gallery attendance and “moderate intensity level sport and active recreation” as well as arts engagement, underline received assumptions within the arts sector. Further statistically significant findings showed that higher rates of participation are found among those from White backgrounds compared with Black or ethnic minority backgrounds, and among those aged 25–64 compared with those in younger or older age groups. The report shows that 45% of all adults attended museums or galleries in the past year and 60% engaged in the arts at least three times. This compares with only 24% of all adults who participated in moderate intensity sport.
