New roof garden for Lyric Theatre

Environmental charity, Groundwork, has transformed the Lyric Hammersmith theatre’s roof terrace into a garden (pictured), which is open to everyone, not just theatre ticket holders. The garden is the first project in London to have benefited from funds from Marks & Spencer’s 5p charge for carrier bags, introduced to encourage customers to reduce the number of plastic bags they use. All proceeds from the charge are distributed to environmental projects. Materials used to create the Lyric’s garden are environmentally sustainable, and the choice of planting and trees will also encourage wildlife habitat creation. The planting has been completed with the support of the Groundwork ‘Green Team’, which helps the long-term unemployed and children to learn horticultural skills. Residents from a nearby housing estate will become ‘Garden Guardians’, to help keep it in tip-top condition.
