Engagement with the arts is on the rise in the North West, while remaining relatively stable across the rest of England, according to the latest report on the ongoing ‘Taking Part’ survey. Attendance increased in the North West from 62% in 2006/07 to 66% in 2007/08, and participation rose from 41% to 45%. This compares with a national average of 67% attendance and 47% participation. Both figures fell for London and the North East in the same period. The report suggests that the increase in the North West is probably due to the impact of Liverpool hosting European Capital of Culture. It suggests that “intensive, city or region-wide focus on culture can make a profound difference” to engagement. The Taking Part survey will help to assess whether the North West region is successful in sustaining the impact of the Capital of Culture year now that the programme of focused activity has come to an end.
