The London Assembly is looking into practical solutions for the modernisation of Londons West End theatres. Growing visitor figures have lead to increased concern that many of the historic theatres will no longer be fit for purpose unless significant investment is found. Of the 49 theatres in the West End, 40 were built before 1937 and require updating.
Because the theatres are commercially owned there has been much debate on where the funding should come from, the private or public sector, but very little action has yet been taken. In its 2003 report, Act Now! Modernising Londons West End Theatres, The Theatres Trust estimated that the cost of repairs would be around £250m and the Assembly, concerned that no progress has been made since the report, is looking into how it can address the problem. Assembly Member, Bob Blackman, will meet with theatre owners and other industry representatives as part of the investigation and will publish his recommendations early next year.
