Scottish arts centre co-leaders to guide venue through next phase of funding agreement
Aberdeenshire’s multi-arts centre the Barn has named its two new co-directors, to lead the organisation as it enjoys a confirmed three more years of funding by Creative Scotland.
GIULIA MONTALBANO and ADAM PUSHKIN will together head up the venue, which delivers a programme of comedy, live music, theatre, and dance, as it puts to use money received as part of the 2025-2028 Multi-Year Funding programme.
Particular areas of focus include the ‘Far Orchard’ project, which will unleash tree planting across the surrounding area, and the transformation of the Barn’s walled garden into a “thriving, community-focused” space.
Creative practitioner and choreographer Montalbano has previously worked with organisations such as Glasgow-based drama school, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling.
“I’m thrilled to be joining the Barn at such an inspiring moment in its journey,” she said.
“This role brings together my passions for creativity, collaboration and community. I’m excited to develop projects that are inclusive, imaginative and rooted in the spirit of togetherness.”
Pushkin, meanwhile, has 25 years of experience in the sector under his belt, including a former position heading up the British Council’s arts programme in India and Indonesia.
“I’m incredibly excited to be taking on this role,” Pushkin said. “The Barn has been a huge part of my life since I moved to Banchory two years ago, so it’s an enormous privilege to be given the opportunity to lead the organisation with Giulia.
“I love bringing people together to create amazing, memorable experiences — and I can’t wait to start working with the brilliant team at the Barn and the communities of Deeside to do just that.”
