After five years in post, ALEX MCGOWAN will stand down as Executive Director and Joint Chief Executive of Citizens Theatre, Glasgow this summer.

The announcement comes as work progresses towards the re-opening of the theatre later this year following a major redevelopment.

McGowan has been pivotal in guiding the redevelopment project through to its final year of completion.

Chair of the board, PAUL MCNAMEE said: “Alex has made a remarkable contribution to the Citizens Theatre in the last five years. In a challenging period for the performing arts sector, he has worked tirelessly in partnership with [Artistic Director DOMINIC HILL] to keep the vision for our new building on track while remaining connected to our audiences and participants.”

Hill added: “Everyone at the Citz is hugely grateful to Alex for his leadership over the last five years, and in particular his unrelenting resolve to bring the building redevelopment project to completion. Later this year we will finally re-open a building that is fit for purpose and allows us to fulfil our artistic, accessibility and sustainability goals.”

McGowan said: "I am really proud of everything the Citizens Theatre has achieved during my time with the company... As plans for reopening start to take shape and the focus moves to the company’s first years in its fantastic new home, it feels the right time to start the process of appointing a new Executive Director to take those plans forward."
