The tenth anniversary of the ground-breaking Government report ‘All Our Futures: Creativity, Culture and Education’, which put forward the case for developing a national strategy for creative and cultural education, is being marked by the publication of a compilation of independent research reports and case studies investigating the impact of the resulting Creative Partnerships programme on the aspirations, achievements, skills and life chances of young people. Since its launch in 2002, Creative Partnerships has completed 8,520 projects working with over 940,000 young people and engaging over 90,000 teachers.

Canterbury Christ Church University is inviting nominations for an award to recognise the role of the Arts in Mental Health. In association with the Royal Society for Public Health, the award will recognise achievements in original or innovative contributions to arts and mental health research and practice in healthcare or community settings. The deadline for nominations is 3 July.

The Hoffmann Building, which forms the major part of Aldeburgh Music’s £16m project to establish a creative campus at Snape Maltings, has opened. It is the culmination of a six-year project to expand the artistic capability of the existing site, and comprises two flexible spaces for rehearsal and performance: the Britten Studio, which seats 340, and the Jerwood Kiln Studio, seating 75.

Black Routes, a new network for African and Caribbean music, has been set up as a partnership between five organisations – Africa Oyé (pictured) in Liverpool, Centre for Music and Arts Technology in Birmingham, Joyful Noise in London, Punch in Birmingham, and Serious in London. Each organisation will tour two projects a year and deliver an associated education or participation programme.

Iceandfire theatre company has joined with the charity Reprieve to raise awareness of torture and abuse under the CIA’s counter-terror method known as ‘extraordinary rendition’, the practice of transferring terror suspects to prisons in countries where there is a known risk of torture. The two organisations have jointly released a viral video campaign to encourage people to find out more about the practice and to call for full inquiries from both the UK and US Governments.

A new programme has been launched by the BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBCSO) and the Royal College of Music (RCM), aiming to broaden the experience offered to postgraduate student instrumentalists aspiring to enter the orchestral profession. Starting in July and running throughout the year, up to 15 final year RCM postgraduate students will be selected to participate in BBCSO rehearsals and may also perform in a special concert. Each student will be assigned a mentor from within the orchestra to provide advice, guidance, coaching and feedback.

A new website, Creative Choices, aims to provide careers advice for the creative sector. It is a collaboration between Creative and Cultural Skills, Skillset and Skillfast-UK, and will offer tools, information and networks to support creative individuals and businesses.

Planning permission for a new gallery in Hastings has been granted to The Jerwood Foundation. The £4m project will be a permanent home for the Jerwood Foundation’s collection of twentieth and twenty-first century British art, and a new regional venue for the Jerwood Visual Arts programme of contemporary arts. As well as gallery space, the building will contain a sculpture courtyard, education space and a research and archive facility. The gallery will demonstrate leadership in terms of environmental sustainability, and the building is projected to cut carbon emissions by around 40% compared to a conventional building.

An online teaching resource, Post Up, has been developed following ‘Memory of Fire: The War of Images and Images of War’, the 2008 Brighton Photo Biennial. Interest from teachers and students keen to explore and understand conflict, power and displacement through engagement with photographic images of war, led to the creation of the resource aimed at teachers of a range of 14–19 subjects including citizenship, media studies, art and design, religious studies, history and photography.

An Advocacy Toolkit to enable people to support local arts funding in advance of the elections on 4 June has been made available by the National Campaign for the Arts (NCA). It includes key messages and a template letter. NCA has also completed its consultation period on its new Manifesto for the Arts, and will be launching the final document on 15 June at a national conference at Tate Britain. The Manifesto encompasses issues such as the contribution the arts make to society, the importance of arts education, economic issues and participation.
