Classic FM and Channel 5 host to lead Sheffield Theatres board
Broadcaster DAN WALKER has accepted a role to chair the board of Sheffield Theatres Trust.
The Classic FM breakfast show presenter, who studied as an undergraduate in Sheffield and has since returned there with his family, steps into a position most recently held by businesswoman DAME JULIE ANN KELLY.
Kelly died, aged 67, after a short illness earlier this year.
“It is a real honour to be asked to be part of something that I know is so loved and respected in Sheffield,” Walker said. “My family always enjoy going to the theatre and we are really proud of the rich heritage and performance quality that Sheffield is known for. I can’t wait to try and support the work of our theatres both here in this beautiful city and beyond.”
TOM BIRD, chief executive of Sheffield Theatres, said the organisation had felt “deep sadness” at Kelly’s loss but was looking to “further the legacy she left us with”.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dan Walker,” Bird said, adding: “Dan’s love of his home city of Sheffield, together with his passion for the power of theatre, make him the perfect candidate to chair this wonderful organisation. We’re immensely proud that Dan, a much-loved figure across the country, will lead Sheffield Theatres into a bright future.”
The board is also poised to gain two fresh trustees over the coming months, with MICHELLE BLACKBURN and RICHARD STUBBS coming on board in January next year.
