SARA WAJID MBE, the co-chief executive of Birmingham Museums Trust, has been appointed to the National Museum Directors’ Council’s executive committee.

The council is an independent, non-governmental organisation that represents the leaders of the UK’s national collections and major regional museums.

Wajid will sit on the executive committee for the next three years.

She will represent both Birmingham Museums Trust and the English Civic Museums Network, a group of senior museum professionals from over 40 organisations.

Wajid joined the Birmingham Museums Trust in November 2020 from Museum of London, where she was the head of engagement for the museum’s new capital project.

Previously, she was head of interpretation at Birmingham Museums Trust.

Wajid is a founder member of the Museum Detox network for people of colour in museums.

On her new appointment, she said, “At a time of dramatic polarisation and geopolitical chaos, museums can be creative spaces where we seek to understand the past in order to help our search for a richer, more just and human future.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity as a member of the National Museum Directors’ Council, to work with colleagues to realise more of this potential.”
