Alice Black graduated from ESSEC Business School in France and began her career in banking in New York. Formerly Head of Strategy and Planning at the Imperial War Museum and Curator of the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms, Alice has indepth knowledge of museums’ operational and strategic issues.

In September 2007, Alice was appointed Deputy Director of the Design Museum with a brief to develop audiences and increase self-generated income. This brief was later expanded to include exhibitions and learning programmes. From 2008 to 2016, Alice led the project to transform the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington into the Design Museum’s new home and create the UK’s leading museum of contemporary design and architecture. Alice was appointed co-Director of the Design Museum in December 2016. In May 2018 the Design Museum was named European Museum of the Year recognising ‘its social impact, international and multi-layered intercultural approach’. Alice stepped down from her role at the Design Museum in January 2020 to pursue new opportunities.

Alice is a Cultural Ambassador in the Mayor of London’s Cultural Leadership Board with a brief to retain London’s Global position as a creative capital, she is an Observer on behalf of the GLA for the Museum of London Project and a member of the British Library Advisory Committee.
