Opera North venue lead to champion space’s ‘club culture’
TONY GREEN will join Opera North’s Leeds city-centre venue, Howard Assembly Room, in the newly created role of general manager and lead programmer ahead of the company’s 2025 autumn events series.
Green is the founder and director of the electronic music label Released, which also comprises a record shop located in the Leeds Corn Exchange. In 2008, he co-founded Speak to the Streets, a youth work organisation that uses hip hop as a tool to engage younger audiences. He is also the co-owner of Fresh Jive Events, which platforms Leeds’ hip hop artists.
Taking on the creative programming of Howard Assembly Room, Opera North said that Green will “redefine the venue’s future via a bold, cross-genre approach inspired by underground club culture, global sounds and boundary-breaking art”.
A 300-capacity performance venue in the heart of Leeds, Howard Assembly Room platforms a variety of musical and cultural performances, including local acts.
Opera North said that the charity is keen to “embrace new ideas and more commercial thinking” to “bolster financial resilience and create a sustainable long-term future for the venue”.
“I’m excited to begin work in this brand new role with Howard Assembly Room, and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together over the coming months and years,” said Green.
“We’re all very lucky to have this truly unique place in Leeds; we have a world-class production offering here at the venue, and my intention is to ensure we can make visiting Howard Assembly Room one of the best nights out you can have in Leeds and accessible to absolutely everyone.”
