South African-born artist JESS HOLDENGARDE is to spend a year in residence at Scotland’s University of Stirling.

Holdengarde, whose camera-based work explores themes related to ecological, social, and economic crises, joins the university in its themed year, ‘Art & Science’.

For the 2025/26 residency, the artist will focus particularly on research about and inspired by water, alongside a team of academics based at the university.

SARAH BROMAGE, head of collections at the University of Stirling, said: “We are delighted to welcome Jess as our artist in residence during our year of Art & Science.

“Their innovative approach to sustainability in photographic practice perfectly embodies the symbiosis of how scientific processes and artistic thinking can create solutions and deepen our understanding of our environment.”

Holdengarde added: “I am very grateful to have the opportunity to spend the year ahead working with and alongside the innovative, thoughtful, and environmentally focused researchers at the University of Stirling. I look forward to connecting and collaborating with them soon.”
